Comet NEOWISE, July 2020
Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) surprised us all with its sudden dazzling appearance as a naked eye object in the summer of 2020. This image was made a few days before its closest approach to Earth (at which point it'll still be nearly as far from us as the Earth is from the Sun). Its magnificent tail stretches across a large area of sky, and long exposure photographs reveal a second tail made of ionized gas being blown away from the comet by the solar wind.
