Crookhaven Peninsula, Mizen, Co. Cork

Description:
From the first photographic foray I made to Cork, this is one of my favourites. It's the Crookhaven Peninsula as seen from about halfway up Brow Head. You can just about make out the village of Crookhaven on the far side of the peninsula, and the Haven itself is visible to the left of the image.

Crookhaven was an important port until the early part of the 20th century. Ships bound for the Atlantic crossing would stop here to provision or take shelter from storms.

It is also noteworthy for its involvement in the development of radio. Marconi set up a mast on the peninsula for his early attempts to send the first trans-Atlantic wireless signal - unfortunately he wasn't successful with it.

Today, it is a quiet village of about thirty people, with three pubs and a charming atmosphere. And when the wind blows, the waves can be truly awesome.
