Description:
Possibly my favourite scene on Dublin Bay is the view of Dun Laoghaire and the Killiney hills from Sandymount strand. I had just purchased a Mamiya C220 medium format camera with an 80mm lens, and took it out to Sandymount to give it a trial run.
It was a wonderful evening, very crisp and clear. I made several images which served mainly as a way of getting used to the camera and its controls. As I was getting ready to leave, I noticed that the moon had risen and was positioned very nicely over Seapoint. I set up the camera and made several exposures of which this is my favourite.
It captures the descending line of the hills to Dun Laoghaire, and the three successively smaller steeples in the town - that of St. Michael's Church, the Maritime Museum and the Town Hall. It also captures the wonderfully subtle colours of the early evening sky and, of course, the moon itself.
In a large print (20x20" or greater), the detail visible along the coast is truly exquisite.
