Description:
Made near the Winter Solstice, this is a scene quite close to my old home near Chicago. I love the contrasts in the image. It's a difficult thing to shoot straight into the sun, even when it's as low on the horizon as it is here. As well as making sure the image is properly exposed, you have to be very careful of your eyesight. In fact, making a photograph such as this is probably not the wisest thing in the world if you value your eyes.
Nonetheless, it's one of my favourites. The contrast between the shadowed and lit areas of prairie grass in the foreground and the silhouettes of the trees against the blue sky make for an interesting visual wander. And the best part is, you don't need to shield your eyes when looking at a print!
