Description:
This is one of my favourite images from Illinois. It was made on a very cold afternoon while my wife and I were out for a drive. As we went along, I noticed that the cloud formation in the top-left third of the picture was refracting the sunlight and was displaying rainbow hues. We quickly pulled over and took the shot handheld.
There was nothing in the foreground to justify inclusion, so I eliminated all but a sliver of ground to give an idea of scale. The result is an image that breaks the traditional compositional rules, but which works very well. The subtle colours in the cloud bank near the surface give way to a rich blue sky, with the rainbow cloud as punctuation.
I consider this image and Wintry Trees, IL to be companion pieces, as they both convey the idea of Winter in Illinois very effectively.
