Description:
Dunluce Castle is perhaps the most spectacularly placed castle in Ireland. Precariously balanced on a promontory jutting out into the Atlantic, it offers a commanding presence.
The photograph was made from the cove to the east of the castle, which offers the best viewpoint. Surprisingly, it is little visited - so even when the castle is overrun with tourists, this spot is perfectly peaceful, with only the sound coming from the waves and seabirds.
The Skerries islands are just visible on the horizon to the right of frame.
There were a number of technical challenges to this shot. Chief among them was the extreme contrast between the shadowed foreground and the castle itself, which was in direct sunlight. An aggressive five stops of graduated neutral density filtration were required to balance the contrast, darkening the sunlit area by a factor of thirty. (Read my article on this subject for more information). That much filtration required a long exposure, which gives a sense of motion to the waves.
