Description:
The Mweelrea Mountains are a striking range of hills that spring up seemingly out of nowhere. The peak of Mweelrea itself (or Maol Réidh to give it its Irish name) is the highest peak in Connaught. It can be seen in this image as the leftmost hump on the main ridge.
The range, along with the Sheffrey Hills to its east (across the Delphi valley) form the northern extent of the Connemara highlands and offer some of the most exceptional hillwalking in the country.
This image was made at sunset on what had otherwise been a fairly dull day. Taken from the Inagh Valley between the 12 Bens and the Maumturks, the Bens were doing a good job of generating clouds to obscure the Sun. For a few moments, however, it broke through and produced this scene.
